The Top 35 Or So Songs of the 80’s
#05: Prince & The Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
Yes, there’s the blatant Christ allegory, but even as the messiah, Prince’s libido is inescapable—anyone else read the title as proto-sexting scripture? To my ears, his proffered sacrifice is an erotic gesture, the “I’m not your lover” lyric notwithstanding. Or maybe that’s the trick: A salvation song delivered through the Prince/sex idiom. The sensual rush of the dream pop backdrop makes worship sound like a sweaty, intimate affair—you know, the passion of the Prince. Then again, I could be wrong. Either way, Prince is god.
When Michael Jackson died it was a bummer but I never really viewed at a cataclysmic event, while the world acted like it had lost the best performer of his generation, I was still cool because to me that man was still alive. That man is Prince. I think to a certain degree the 80’s Prince v. MJ debate was that decade’s Beatles v. Stones and just like I went with the Stones because they had something more raw, more genuine, so to have I always felt a greater connection with Prince’s music. Prince is able to use his music to not only express his own passion but to really make you geel that frenzied, ”go crazy” true passion that is both more dangerous and more immediate. You can have the King of Pop, I’ll take Prince.
